From a hopeful start in 1994, the Winter Magic Festival in Katoomba has grown in size and profile to the point where it is the Blue Mountains major annual event. The Festival marks the shift from the ever-shortening days of Winter to the lengthening days of Spring and the promise of warmth and rejuvenation. |

While climate changes and increasing warmth have been experienced across the world, the Blue Mountains and particularly the Upper Mountains remains a place of distinct seasons. Winter in the mountains is not something that is easily ignored and has a real meaning for local residents.
The vital role that the weather plays in the daily life of mountain residents has meant that the mountains tends to attract people who are environmentally and socially aware. This is most evident in the strong local community and the Festival has, since its start, showcased the talents, interests and activities of local groups and organisations.
In 2006, Winter Magic organisers intend to go a step further by creating a Green Precinct at the the top of Katoomba St at the centre of the Festival to promote alternative and responsible energy and resource usage. We will make this a space where locals and visitors can learn about energy and resource use options, where they can find out more about individual products, services or projects. | |
