They’re Mean and Mindless

The Pirates are a regular feature of Winter Magic and recent rumours suggest they will be making a series of raids on both the Saturday and Sunday of the Festival. Few people are aware of the long history the pirates have had with the mountains. Thanks to the Everglades Research Department that is about to change. We forward a short history of pirates with more to be revealed in the coming months.

“Originally respectable gentlemen and officers of the  Venetian navy in the 1470s, the Pirates of Ancient Oceania were of middling competence.

Under the impression that Al-Farghani’s calculation of the earth’s circumference in 876 CE  was measured in roman miles, they set off with high hopes of sailing the Ocean Sea to the spice-laden lands of the East.  Al-Farghani’s calculation was accurate but, sadly, the arabic mile is three times the length of the roman mile. There was a lot of world from West to the East.

Unlike their Genoese compatriot (that Spanish toadie), Cristo Columbo, who made the same error twenty years later but had the wind at his back, the Venetian  grandees were blighted by the doldrums (windless days) which led to droopy moustaches (bad hair days).

Their morale as low as their moustaches, the mariners drifted inexorably southwards till they reached Terra Australis and then, through a series of high floods and navigational oddities, washed up HERE  in the last remnants of the Ancient Ocean that once covered what is now the Blue Mountains.

With little hope of naval honours, the officers and their men quickly degenerated into a life of piracy. “
