Winter Magic Festival :: WHAT ARE YOU WEARING THIS YEAR?
WHAT ARE YOU WEARING THIS YEAR?
What are you wearing to the Festival? You haven't thought about it? Well, you're in luck because we've been looking out for you. Whether you are coming as a goblin, grasshopper, goatherd or member of the Roman Senate (there's bound to be a prize for anyone who wears a toga in our weather) we can probably help. We've been scouring Katoomba for the best costumes and accoutrements. (slideshow images by Wild Places Photography).

Katoomba's Costume Corridor
This year, festival organizers are emphasising the importance of dressing up. Are you part of the festival or merely a by-stander. Of course you're part of it. So the next question is what are you wearing? You can always make something yourself or take a look at the costumeries we have listed below.

Swish
Top of Katoomba St Opposite Carrington

The first place you'll find is Swish on your left opposite the Carrington in Katoomba St. It's only small but you could dress yourself pretty well without going any further. One tip though. If you purchase the item shown in the picture on the right buy a coat as well.

Incantations 38 Katoomba St 4782 9007
Continue down Katoomba St on the same side to Incantations where you will find this blaze of colour squeezed between Cafes Zuppa and Isobar. Colourful orient-influenced and sub-continental colours. Provides a stark contrast against the subdued colours of a winter day.

Lifeline
Katoomba St

Keep going about 100 metres down the street and cross over Katoomba St. Yes, Katoomba St is built on a slope. Not as big as Sallies or St Vinnies but also less trammeled. You might be the first one there. Worth a look. Very reasonable prices.

Cross back to the left (lucky you are going down). So you're going to the ball but have nothing to wear. This should be your first stop. With at least two balls this year you might even need more than one costume. You can't wear the same thing twice.

After-A-Fashion
193 Katoomba St 4782 5816

For the best service in town stop here. Very reasonable prices and stock changes regularly. Pre-loved, often unusual, retro and vintage clothing. Jenny's windows are always interesting. Note the palm fronds on right.

Simply known to locals are Viviannas, long recognised as the home of mountains chic.

Curios Collectables

This was our first trip downstairs. Upstairs is an antique collectors dream but prospective Winter Magic revellers should head straight downstairs. A huge range of clothes and costumes. This was a real surprise

Sal-on Funky Recycled Fashion
57 Waratah St 4782 7715

Now we turn off Katoomba St. This place is a gem. Beautiful retro clothing in excellent condition. This is another option for the ball.

Sal-on
St Vincent De Pauls
63 Waratah St 4782 1068

One of the heavy hitters. St Vinnies often brings in stock specially for the Festival. A large and eclectic wardrobe but you'll find a bit of competition for the best stock.

St Vincent De Paul

Salvation Army
33-35 Waratah St next to down the side of Centrelink

Finally, head back up Waratah St and over Katoomba St keeping Coles on your right you'll find the other big hitter in the fashion stakes. Less popular than St Vinnies but often has some wonderful stock. A wedding dress we saw there recently was "to die for" but unfortunately someone had already nabbed it with the Festival in mind. There are other pleasures in visiting here. You meet Fabian.
